Day 1

  • What did you do today?
    • Briefly describe your day’s activities
    • Include at least one photograph from today
      • So, for today we had to extract caffeine from two different types of tea-namely black tea, and japanese green tea.
  • What did you learn today?
    • Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
      • Today, I learnt how to extract the caffeine from Japanese green tea, operate different machines such as the Rotary Evaporator, and Infrared (IR) scanner. On top of this, I also had to apply knowledge from Secondary 1 Chemistry - Separation Techniques. Some used were namely Chromatography, Filtration, and use of a Separating Funnel.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
      • In this project, not everything may go the way that we would want it to go. For example, when we were filtering the boiled tea, sometimes the solution would foam excessively, and we had to re-filter it. Too many times of doing it would sometimes drive one crazy and rage quit but I did not back down and continue to re-filter the solution (while other groups pulled ahead of us).
    • Share your insights for this project.
      • This project was an eye-opener. I learnt more about the pros and cons of caffeine, where they can be found (previously I had not known that Chocolate contained caffeine!) There were other information pieces, such as drinking about 100 cups of coffee in a day will kill you due to overdose of caffeine.
